Angelo’s in Burien-51 Years of tradition provided by the Ricci Family

Posted by danita jolly 1 Comment »

With so much growth and change in Burien, one thing has stayed the same.  Angelo’s in Burien has grown 10 times in size from when they originally opened as a small Italian deli in 1957.   Local residents can count on the same menu and even the same staff for all these years.

All of the Ricci kids — Mike, Mark, Ron, Richard, Phil, Kathy, Lisa, Larry and Frank — grew up working in the family business, and most of them still do.

Mark Ricci (above, click on picture for full story) started working at the deli at age 7, when his main job was to keep the cooler full of soda. He’s now manager of Angelo’s in Burien, which has a sister restaurant in Bellevue, as well as a coffee and wine bar, 909 Coffee and Wine, down the street from the Burien restaurant.  It’s not uncommon for the Ricci’s to be on a first name basis with their regulars.  So come be a part of the family!

909 has some really good news to share! Welcoming a new and talented chef…Tailer Uebelacker.  Specializing in all things edible, you won’t be disappointed!  It must run in the family, Tailer’s mother and father owned an Italian deli when Tailer and her brother Corey were growing up.

And now for the 909 bad news!  We have to say goodbye to our favorite barista and best cheese cake make Corey Uebelacker.

We will be crying in our coffee for awhile until we can adjust.  I know 909 regulars are going to miss him.  But we are happy for Corey, because he is off to bigger and better things working with his mom, Kim Mazzuca, in the real estate business.  They have a lot on their plate with two huge projects selling.  If you would like to keep up on what they are doing, you can visit them at www.federalwayundressed.com

Don’t Miss Out - Visit These Places Today!

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

Seattle Metropolitan Magazine once again has made noteable mention of our local Burien community.

I was sitting here reading my favorite magazine drinking some wine (true story) when I came across another great article about Burien.  We know it’s great, but it’s about time everyone else realizes just how much we have to offer.  So if you live anywhere near Burien, which would include; Des Moines, Tukwila,  and you too West Seattle.  You need to make your way over for a visit and glass of wine.  You have the perfect opportunity this Saturday, July 26th.  Vino Bello, where I just had some awesome Prosecco the other day, was one of “Best of Burien” mentioned in the Seattle Metropolitan.  Vino Bello  is having their Two Year Anniversary Party.  Check out the details right here…

Now the rest of the best of Burien included;

Elliot Bay Brewhouse and Pub.  This is another great place, especially if you have kids, or don’t.  It’s lively and loud and your three year old could fit in perfectly.  Since I ate everything on the menu the first couple of months they were open, I’ve had to take a little break.  But it’s a fun place to drink and eat and you can play shuffleboard.  The beer is very good, I’m not an expert, but I am a conessiuer and own my own growler from there.  It’s your own personal tub of beer that you take in and they refill for you and then you can take it home.

Next is the Burien Market, 233 S.W. 152nd St.  This is on my list of places to visit this week.  They say you can find hard to find Asian spices, fresh produce and herbs.

Seahurst Park was mentioned for its views of the Pugest Sound, Olympics, Vashon and Blake Island.  I love this park and have been teaching my children to drive in their parking lot just recently.  Again, if you have kids, it’s the perfect place to turn over rocks and find crabs and all sorts of moving creepy marine life that kids are not afraid to touch.  Or it’s a very romantic place to watch a sunset or take your dog for a walk.  So come visit!

Something new and hot but not on the map yet is Filiberto’s Cucina Italiana.  This I will follow up on when I can get more information.  But more food and Italian is always a good thing!  Mangia Mangia!

The Urban Myth of Rat City

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

The origin of the nickname ‘Rat City’ also known as White Center has lead to a wild goose chase.  Growing up in the area, I assumed it was because of the rat problems we faced.  Yes, we had rat problems back in the good old days.  But so do many affluent neighborhoods, so what.  How did we get dubbed ‘Rat City’?  This conversation was brought up last week with a group of adults, all raised in the Highline area.  Unbeknownst to me, they had other ideas of the origin.  Now after trying to locate the correct answer, I’ve uncovered more stories with no proof of any of them being true.  Can anyone out there bust this myth?   Did it come from WWII when Seattle was designated a Restricted Alcohol Territory (RAT), when servicemen visited the unincorporated White Center where they had less restrictive liquor laws?  Was it during that same time when there was a military Relocation and Training (RAT) facility in the area?  Or did it stem from Southgate Roller Rink, in which the name ‘rink rats’ referred to skaters.  I’ll keep searching and let you know if I can find an answer.  In the meantime, if someone has proof of the origin, I’ll be waiting…

Burien Block Party-We have a Winner!

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

What a beautiful day for the Burien Annual Block Party!  And a perfect day for an ice cream eating contest.  Here is a picture of one of the winners.  Guess what the prize was?  More ice cream!

Then, not to miss the sausage eating contest, with sausages provided by Dan The Sausage Man.  If I overheard the crowd correctly, this “husky” won third year in a row.

And some cute cheerleaders on the side that were cheering everyone on!

Happy adults in the beer garden!

So if you missed it this year, be sure and check it out next year.  It goes from Noon-Midnight. There is music, kids inflatable toys, kareoke, games and prizes.

Job Growth Continues in Seattle-Where is everyone going to live?

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

From April 2007 to April 2008, the Seattle area ranked second in job growth of all metropolitan areas with population of three million or greater.  With a growth rate of 2.1% in the last 12 months, Seattle’s job growth is 2.3 times as much as the average growth for cities of our size.

When cities have increases in the number of jobs; this means they need more apartments, condominiums and single family houses.  Some of these jobs are taken by local residents, including recent college graduates; while some are taken by people moving to the area.  The Seattle area has always been a desirable place for people to relocate to.  But since the Seattle area economy is outperforming most other metro areas in the United States; more people than typical will move into the Puget Sound area in the next few years.  The increased demand for housing will cause rents to increase and prices for condominiums and houses to increase.

Apartment rents have increased significantly in the last few years in the Seattle area.   This was due to fewer apartments being built over the last several years (when rent increases were lower) and lots of apartments taken away as they were converted to condominiums.  As such, the cost of waiting to buy has increased and will continue to increase.

All those factors combined lead to a conclusion that demand should continue for real estate in our market, despite the gloom and doom national outlook.

About the statistics:  There are 369 Metropolitan Statistical Areas within the United States monitored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Of these 369 MSAs, 16 have a 2007 population of 3 million people or more.  The chart above lists these 16 MSAs from the highest to the lowest in terms of employment growth rate added between April 2007 and April 2008. (The growth rate is determined by jobs added between April 2007 and April 2008 divided by the number of jobs in April 2007.)  The Seattle MSA includes King, Pierce and Snohomish Counties.
