Because I live in Burien and I’m over 30 with kids and all my friends are over 30 with kids, I wanted to post this funny little story someone gave me about how good our kids have it now-a-days. It started bringing back memories of the beginning of MTV, the end of the 8-track era and when principles had paddles in their office! Go Evergreen Wolverines.
THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!
When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking Twenty-five miles to school every morning
Uphill… barefoot…BOTH ways Yadda, yadda, yadda
And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they’ve got it! But now that… I’m over the ripe old age of thirty, I can’t help but look around and notice the youth of today.
You’ve got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a damn Utopia! And I hate to say it but you kids today you don’t know how good you’ve got it!
I mean, when I was a kid we didn’t have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, We had to go to the damn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!
There was no email!! We had to actually write somebody a letter, with a pen! Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take like a week to get there! Stamps were 10 cents! Child Protective Services didn’t care if our parents beat us. As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our ars! No where was safe!
There were no MP3′ s or Napsters! You wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the record store and shoplift it yourself!
Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ’d usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players! We had tape decks in our car. We’d play our favorite tape and ‘eject’ it when finished and the tape would come undone. Cause that’s how we rolled dig?
We didn’t have fancy crap like Call Waiting! If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that’s it! And we didn’t have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your Bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn’t know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!
We didn’t have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like ‘Space Invaders’ and ‘asteroids’. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen forever!
And you could never win. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!
You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing! You had to get off your a*s and walk over to the TV to change the channel! There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I’m saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little rat-bas#ards!
And we didn’t have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove … Imagine that!
That’s exactly what I’m talking about! You kids today have got it too easy. You’re spoiled. You guys wouldn’t have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!
Regards, The over 30 Crowd

I had the pleasure to stop into 909 awhile back and Steve Olson was playing. It was my favorite music they’ve had there so far. Steve provides a pleasant atmosphere and really great music to listen to or sing along. It’s worth going out of your way to make plans to come by and enjoy yourself.

Steve Olson will be returning to the 909 Coffee and Wine Bistro on Saturday night, January 31st from 8:30 to 11:30. The last time I played there it was FANTASTIC!. This is a really nice little place to sit and relax and listen to music and have some extremely good food. It is not a large venue so if you plan on making it please call ahead at 206-243-7909 to make reservations. I really hope to see you there again or for your first time. I know you’ll love this place.
CLICK ON THE PICTURE ABOVE TO WATCH STEVE SING “HORSE WITH NO NAME” ON YOUTUBE. IT SOUNDS GREAT!

Bonds still struggled a bit this week but there was some silver lining today as mortgage-backed securities closed on the upside. With few economic reports released this week, bonds took most of their direction from the stock market. Traders hammered companies whose earnings reports came in below expectations and rewarded those whose reports came inline or above expectations. The Fed is scheduled to meet next Wednesday (Jan 28). It will be interesting to see what comes out of this meeting. Some Fed members have been recently hinting about concerns of inflation. As I’ve said many times before inflation is the archenemy of interest rates. Hopefully inflation won’t be brought up and rates will remain steady or better yet improve. *For Jumbo Super Credit . . . this loan program rewards our best bank customers with incredibly low rates on non-conforming loan amounts (jumbo). In order to qualify for Tier 2, a customer must have between $50,000 and $250,000 in aggregate balances with the bank. For Tier 2, aggregate balances must be greater than $250,000. Loan amounts for this program are capped at $2,000,000.

There are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, depressed, stuck, hopeless. Usually the last thing you want is a pep talk by someone. They don’t understand my situation, they don’t get how I feel. Sometimes it just seems easier to give up. Like this story I heard:
There were two neighbors. One had a dog. The dog was constantly howling and howling. So the neighbor finally asks, “What is wrong with your dog?” The other neighbor replies “he’s laying on a spike”. The first neighbor asks, “why doesn’t he get up and move?” The owner of the dog replies, “It doesn’t hurt that bad!”
This video shows how one person with circumstances that most of us could not imagine is teaching a lesson and in return receives something he could never have otherwise.

DON’T LET YOUR EXCUSES KEEP YOU DOWN!

Mark Eaton is a local artist living in Normandy Park. Although his work is nationally known and has been shown throughout the Pacific Northwest, it is now being displayed at Burien’s exceptional local wine bar, Vino Bello.

His oil paintings are first inspired by light, color and movement. The stillness and intensity with which he examines nature carry over in his approach in painting. In his landscapes, Mark searches for a deeper understanding of the spirit of a centralized “inner light”, and strives to address universal concepts, such as beauty, calm, peace.

Patience is evident in the attention and deliberateness with which his paintings are made. They are each a window, where light is a different tint and weight. Where the air is humming with something other than this dimension. For Commission work, you can reach Mark Eaton personally at 206-277-0866.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkess; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Here’s a video from the Seattle Times local news taken along MLKJ Way with some reflections about this day.

Let’s catch up and take a look at what’s been selling in Burien. Here’s a look at Burien real estate stats for the month of December 2008. The chart below shows how many homes sold/closed during the month. With a grand total of 16, one of these sales being a condo. A total of 4 of these were new construction Townhomes in Downtown Burien at The village at Millers Creek. Not included in this chart are the amount of homes and condos that went pending in December which means sold but not yet closed. There were an additional 5 homes and 3 condos that went pending last month. As you can also see from the chart below, the quickest selling price range was the $250-$300k.

The bond market took a turn for the worse today. Stocks were all over the map and bonds seemed to be directionless. The FNMA 30-year 4.0% security lost 44 bps today and didn’t have much time to try to recover as the bond market had an early close ahead of Monday’s Martin Luther King holiday. The government continued its bailout ways today as it gave BofA an additional $20 billion to help it cope with recent losses. The Dow closed at 8,281 and oil wrapped up at $36.51/barrel. The bond market will be closed on Monday in observance of MLK. No new rates will be available until Tuesday. I’d like to introduce a new rate category below. It’s called the Jumbo Super-Credit. This loan program rewards our best bank customers with incredibly low rates on non-conforming loan amounts (jumbo). In order to qualify for Tier 1, a customer must have between $50,000 and $250,000 in aggregate balances with the bank. For Tier 2, aggregate balances must be greater than $250,000. Loan amounts for this program are capped at $2,000,000.
