Even with a bus load of 5th graders it was only a short trip from Burien to the Seattle Waterfront. Today was a fun day of exploring the Seattle Aquarium. The kids got to collect samples of plankton and then take the research indoors and view under a microscope. I never knew there were so many different species of plankton, I guess the Spongebob version is only one of them.
Here are a few pictures from the trip:

I was reading an article recently on the Oprah website, it was called 5 ways to deal with money stress. Fourth on the list was:
Take up knitting. According to research at the Harvard-affiliated Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, the repetitive motion and focus of needlework can elicit what’s known as the relaxation response—a calming meditation-like state that slows heart rate and causes blood pressure to drop. In addition, a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society suggests that knitting is associated with a lower risk of dementia for those 65 and older.
Which made me think of our local Yarn Stash! The other day and I was wondering why it looked so inviting when I walked by and then I read on their website that they just got some new cushy and comfy chairs to do your knitting in.
Here is a copy of their February Newsletter:

Over the past year I’ve been reading Robs World. I personally have not taken the time to keep up on how to live a greener life or read books and websites on how to be more sustainable so I appreciate the time and dedication that has been put into his blog. I find Rob’s Blog has so much information right there for me, I can pick and choose the things that I can adapt into my life to help make a difference. It has been inspirational in several ways, encouraging us all to be a bit more green and giving advice on how we can all participate to reduce waste: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair. What a lovely idea and it has a comical twist that I appreciate, besides I never met a Pisces I didn’t like. After reading one of his articles I immediately went out and bought metal water containers for my kids. Aaaaah, how many plastic water bottles do we go through a week! Now we use filtered water at home and our new containers, just that one change made me feel better. He also gives gardening tips and advice. Along with challenges that will hopefully educate and motivate you. Like the Buy Sustainably Challenge or info about the 100 mile diet. Rob has personally turned his yard into a certified Wildlife Habitat and you can too!
Lets embrace the challenge of being thrifty and sustainable. Read Rob’s Blog!
You can also visit the Sustainable Burien website; an organization started in January of 2008. We recognize the need to promote and participate in the creation of a sustainable community in Burien. We invite all residents and businesses to participate in creating a sustainable local community by sharing their ideas, passions, knowledge and talents.
The cast of the upcoming play “No Strings Attached” wanted to give you a preview of the hard work and dedication that is put into perfecting their performance! The future of the school musical is dependent on the ability to cover the costs of production, so please support the St. Francis of Assisi school musical by coming to the show.

No Strings Attached is a twist on the original story of the talking puppet. In this play within a play, Carl becomes Pinocchio, a magical marionette, and learns about life through a series of bad decisions and mishaps that result in transforming him into a donkey. Along the way, he meets hip-hopping, swinging, and rock ‘n’ rolling characters who attempt to train him to be a good “woodenhead.” Finally, Pinocchio redeems himself by saving Geppetto.
Adults: $10
Seniors and students who are not performing/singing: $8
I had the pleasure to stop into 909 awhile back and Steve Olson was playing. It was my favorite music they’ve had there so far. Steve provides a pleasant atmosphere and really great music to listen to or sing along. It’s worth going out of your way to make plans to come by and enjoy yourself.
Steve Olson will be returning to the 909 Coffee and Wine Bistro on Saturday night, January 31st from 8:30 to 11:30. The last time I played there it was FANTASTIC!. This is a really nice little place to sit and relax and listen to music and have some extremely good food. It is not a large venue so if you plan on making it please call ahead at 206-243-7909 to make reservations. I really hope to see you there again or for your first time. I know you’ll love this place.

There are times in our lives when we feel overwhelmed, depressed, stuck, hopeless. Usually the last thing you want is a pep talk by someone. They don’t understand my situation, they don’t get how I feel. Sometimes it just seems easier to give up. Like this story I heard:
There were two neighbors. One had a dog. The dog was constantly howling and howling. So the neighbor finally asks, “What is wrong with your dog?” The other neighbor replies “he’s laying on a spike”. The first neighbor asks, “why doesn’t he get up and move?” The owner of the dog replies, “It doesn’t hurt that bad!”
This video shows how one person with circumstances that most of us could not imagine is teaching a lesson and in return receives something he could never have otherwise.
DON’T LET YOUR EXCUSES KEEP YOU DOWN!
Mark Eaton is a local artist living in Normandy Park. Although his work is nationally known and has been shown throughout the Pacific Northwest, it is now being displayed at Burien’s exceptional local wine bar, Vino Bello.

His oil paintings are first inspired by light, color and movement. The stillness and intensity with which he examines nature carry over in his approach in painting. In his landscapes, Mark searches for a deeper understanding of the spirit of a centralized “inner light”, and strives to address universal concepts, such as beauty, calm, peace.

Patience is evident in the attention and deliberateness with which his paintings are made. They are each a window, where light is a different tint and weight. Where the air is humming with something other than this dimension. For Commission work, you can reach Mark Eaton personally at 206-277-0866.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkess; only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Here’s a video from the Seattle Times local news taken along MLKJ Way with some reflections about this day.
For more information on Martin Luther King Jr. there is a great online resource here showing videos, pictures, quotes, speeches and more.
