Burien annexation update, move OK’d by county

Posted by danita jolly 2 Comments »

By Eric Mathison

Burien took a major step forward March 30 toward annexing the southern portion of North Highline when the King County Boundary Review Board gave preliminary approval to the proposal.

The board is expected to formally approve Burien’s request on April 16 at their meeting in the Mercer Island Community Center.

“This is a historic moment,” Burien City Manager Mike Martin declared. “We have never been this far on annexation. I think we are on our way.”

If formally approved by the boundary board, an election will be held in the proposed annexation area on Aug. 18.

If voters pass the proposal, Burien staffers will prepare for annexation and welcome the new residents in March 2010, according to Martin.

Before the vote, Burien will hold several public meetings in North Highline. The next one is scheduled April 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Hilltop Elementary, 12250 24th Ave. S.

Other open houses are set for May 19 from 6:30- 8 p.m. at Salmon Creek School, 614 S.W. 120th St. and June 16 from 6-7:15 p.m. at Southern Heights Elementary School, 11249 14th Ave. S.

“We’re trying to do everything we can,” Martin added. “We want a big vote.”

Weekly Mortgage/Interest Rate Update by Ben Lenderman

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

We were able to pick up some pricing this week from where we left off last Friday.  Continued stock market and unemployment woes led investors to the safe haven that is the bond market.  The Dow closed at 6,626 and employment figures released today showed an additional loss of 651,000 jobs in February – bringing the unemployment rate up to 8.1%.  One (unfortunately) interesting note in today’s trading was GM.  The automaker giant traded at its lowest level since May 1933.  Yikes!

We’re hoping to have more information soon on the Homeowner Affordability and Stability Plan.  We know what the plan has in mind but we don’t yet know how it will be implemented.  There are many requirements that a homeowner must meet in order to be eligible for the plan, but the Obama administration is forecasting a potential benefit to 5 million Americans through loan refinances or loan modifications.  Hopefully we’ll have more information on this by next Friday.

All rates are based on a principal and interest payment and a 1% loan origination fee.  Please note that interest rates for condos are slightly higher than what’s show below.

Burien Real Estate News

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

A couple days ago several of our local real estate companies including; Coldwell Banker, Keller Williams, Windermere, Prudential, John L. Scott, Re/Max Team One, McCarthy GMAC Real Estate held a Mega Broker’s Open.  There were 13 homes within a one mile radius for real estate agents to come preview.  I checked in with our Burien Re/Max Team One office and this is what Leslie Newman had to say.

“The Brokers Open went really well and a huge thank you to Nicole Beck for putting it together.  I had over 15 agents stop by and preview which I very much appreciated.

Our office is doing fantastic.  As of today we have 10 Associates.  We are very busy with listings and sales.  Several of the associates are busy with short sales as well as first time home buyers and move up customers.

Changes I have recently noticed include multiple offers on properties priced under $280,000.  I am seeing multiple offers in several areas of Des Moines.

Our Shorewood View Estates plat has 3 sales in the last 30 days.

We have some gorgeous view homes for sale priced to sell.  It is a great time to buy a home!”

Come Celebrate The Burien/Interim Art Space-January 24th

Posted by danita jolly 3 Comments »

I asked one of our local Burien Artists, Lory Newsom her thoughts on the upcoming celebration:

“I am totally excited about the incredible opportunity that our little town of Burien is getting, through the installation of the Passage.  I have lived here my entire life and knowing that we will hold this awesome sculpture of mother and child which has also been looking over the San Fransisco Bay is pretty exciting.  Can’t wait for the opening. As an artist, I love it when something is made out of nothing, it thrills me.  I love use, reuse, recycle.”  Visit Lory’s art at weepingwaxstudio.com or http:weepingwax.blogspot.com

On January 24, Burien will unveil a project that transforms a vacant construction site into a public gathering place for community members of all ages. One of the first of its kind in the Country, the Burien/ Interim Art Space project is a year-long experiment to turn a block of Burien Town Square into a temporary sculptural garden where art and space are intrinsically re-envisioned.

The B/ IAS project has been many months in the making and has engaged a number of community partners including the Burien Arts Commission, Urban Partners, City of Burien, Ignition NW, GGLO , and 4Culture. The interim art space occupies Phase 2 of Burien Town Square, a project, like many others that was placed on hold due to the current economic climate.

Rather than suffer the stark void of a vacant site in the downtown core, Burien Arts Commission Board Members Kathy Justin and Dane Johnson approached property owner, Urban Partners, about using the site for an interim art space. Long-time supporter of the arts, Urban Partners was happy to donate their land for an ambitious project like B/ IAS. With this donation and the on-going support from City of Burien, Ignition NW, GGLO, and 4-Culture, Kathy and Dane moved forward with plans to transform the site into an interim art space.   Read more from WorldChangingSeattle…

A 30′ sculpture of a mother and child, The Passage will be the first artwork installed in the new Burien/ Interim Art Space (B/ IAS). This impressive sculpture is being transported from its current location on the Embarcadero in San Francisco.  The Passage was originally created for Burning Man, built from recycled scrap metal, and features a flame between the hands of the mother and child, water falling from their other hands, and footprints also lighted with flames. The sculpture will only have the flames lighted for special events. Picture here

The B/ IAS grand opening event starts at 3 p.m. with a pre-event artists’ reception at the Burien Town Square sales center, followed by a processional to the interim arts space, and the lighting of The Passage, which features both flames and water. Other sculptures will be introduced, also featuring interactivity and flame.

Please mark your calendars for the afternoon of Saturday, January 24th, and we will see you at this exciting community event.

By Michelle Esteban

SEATTLE — Foreclosures are taking a toll on tens of thousands of homeowners in our state.

According to Realty Trac, more than 31,000 housing units were foreclosed in October in our state.

Pierce and Thurston Counties had the highest foreclosure rates last month — one in every 236 housing units in Pierce County was foreclosed, while in Thurston County, one in every 373 housing units. And the numbers for November are climbing.

Facing a foreclosure is daunting and demoralizing, but there is help.  Read More..

Little things mean a lot, thanks to a Burien clerk.

Posted by danita jolly No Comments »

Thanksgiving, a time to be thankful.  I came across a story and felt thankful for a few things.  Komo News went undercover with cameras from Marysville to Burien.  The purpose was to expose the difficulty that disabled drivers have when it comes to refueling their vehicles.  Out of 7 stations, only two came to the gentleman’s assistance.  I felt grateful that our Burien attendant, Felicia Hammond was happy to assist.  Many times the disabled patron couldn’t even get a passerby to go get an attendant.  I hope this holiday season we can all slow down enough to take notice of those around us and reach out a hand when we see someone that needs it.  If you would like to read the article or watch the video, visit Komo News.
