Look who’s new in town…

Actually, it’s a much friendlier face. Ronnie Santone, owner of Hey Paison here in Burien.

Ronnie is pointing at his homemade meatballs which are hand-rolled using beef, veal and pork and soaked in tomato “gravy”. He’s smiling because he knows you’re going to love it!
Even though Hey Paison has only been open for a short time, they have already earned an award. Recognized by www.nwsource.com as one of the top 10 Deli’s in Seattle. So what’s on the menu? Their famous Philly Cheesesteak, Eggplant Parmesan Sandwich, the Peppers ‘n’ Eggs Hoagies, Italian Porkette and Roast Beef Hoagies, not to mention the special Italian soup called Pasta Fagioli.
Ronnie claims to make the best cheesecake, which is being carried by Whole Foods market, which gives him bragging rights. Go see Ronnie, eat good food, and listen to some Sinatra. Hey Paison is located at 641 152nd Ave. S.W. Burien, 206-631-8668. Hours M-W 11:00-6, Thur-Sat 11-7, Sunday 11:30-4pm.

With so much growth and change in Burien, one thing has stayed the same. Angelo’s in Burien has grown 10 times in size from when they originally opened as a small Italian deli in 1957. Local residents can count on the same menu and even the same staff for all these years.
All of the Ricci kids — Mike, Mark, Ron, Richard, Phil, Kathy, Lisa, Larry and Frank — grew up working in the family business, and most of them still do.
Mark Ricci (above, click on picture for full story) started working at the deli at age 7, when his main job was to keep the cooler full of soda. He’s now manager of Angelo’s in Burien, which has a sister restaurant in Bellevue, as well as a coffee and wine bar, 909 Coffee and Wine, down the street from the Burien restaurant. It’s not uncommon for the Ricci’s to be on a first name basis with their regulars. So come be a part of the family!

909 has some really good news to share! Welcoming a new and talented chef…Tailer Uebelacker. Specializing in all things edible, you won’t be disappointed! It must run in the family, Tailer’s mother and father owned an Italian deli when Tailer and her brother Corey were growing up.

Pictured above: Kim Mazzuca, Tailer, Eric Uebelacker
And now for the 909 bad news! We have to say goodbye to our favorite barista and best cheese cake make Corey Uebelacker.

We will be crying in our coffee for awhile until we can adjust. I know 909 regulars are going to miss him. But we are happy for Corey, because he is off to bigger and better things working with his mom, Kim Mazzuca, in the real estate business. They have a lot on their plate with two huge projects selling. If you would like to keep up on what they are doing, you can visit them at www.federalwayundressed.com

Seattle Metropolitan Magazine once again has made noteable mention of our local Burien community.

I was sitting here reading my favorite magazine drinking some wine (true story) when I came across another great article about Burien. We know it’s great, but it’s about time everyone else realizes just how much we have to offer. So if you live anywhere near Burien, which would include; Des Moines, Tukwila, and you too West Seattle. You need to make your way over for a visit and glass of wine. You have the perfect opportunity this Saturday, July 26th. Vino Bello, where I just had some awesome Prosecco the other day, was one of “Best of Burien” mentioned in the Seattle Metropolitan. Vino Bello is having their Two Year Anniversary Party. Check out the details right here…

Now the rest of the best of Burien included;
Elliot Bay Brewhouse and Pub. This is another great place, especially if you have kids, or don’t. It’s lively and loud and your three year old could fit in perfectly. Since I ate everything on the menu the first couple of months they were open, I’ve had to take a little break. But it’s a fun place to drink and eat and you can play shuffleboard. The beer is very good, I’m not an expert, but I am a conessiuer and own my own growler from there. It’s your own personal tub of beer that you take in and they refill for you and then you can take it home.
Next is the Burien Market, 233 S.W. 152nd St. This is on my list of places to visit this week. They say you can find hard to find Asian spices, fresh produce and herbs.
Seahurst Park was mentioned for its views of the Pugest Sound, Olympics, Vashon and Blake Island. I love this park and have been teaching my children to drive in their parking lot just recently. Again, if you have kids, it’s the perfect place to turn over rocks and find crabs and all sorts of moving creepy marine life that kids are not afraid to touch. Or it’s a very romantic place to watch a sunset or take your dog for a walk. So come visit!
Something new and hot but not on the map yet is Filiberto’s Cucina Italiana. This I will follow up on when I can get more information. But more food and Italian is always a good thing! Mangia Mangia!

If you eat at any of the locations below on Tuesday during the month of July, 5% of its sales will be donated to the Burien Arts Association: So eat, drink and be merry in July, because it’s all for a good cause. Burien Arts Association has been active since 1965 and working to bring art into our community. They provide gallery space for artists, outdoor theater during the summer months, and periodic art based events during the year. Currently they will bring two Shakespeare performances on July 26 and August 2; two jazz concerts July 19 and August 10; and a puppet theatre performance on July 13.

B&E Meats already has a reputation for excellent meat and seafood, but I can’t pass the opportunity to give another shout out. They also rank high for their exeptional customer service. My family has been a indulging here for over a decade. I promise summer is coming, so go get something to bbq today. You will be happy you did. Taste the quality and you will never buy from anywhere else. Buon Giorno!
There are only a couple of things that I really get excited about. The purse department at Nordstroms, Poggi Bonsi and Poggi Bonsi Cucina. They are setting up for the Burien side walk sale that will be going on from June 6th-8th. It’s covered, so don’t let the rain stop you. Expect some fabulous deals! Come treat yourself, or if you have any up and coming parties or events that you need a gift for, now is the time to stop in and make a purchase. Every inch of the store is draped in stunning rich colors of Italian and French ceramics, vases and linens. Pieces that express such authentic craftsmenship, comparable only to the finest poetry. I can’t help but stare in awe. Can you see how excited I get about this treasure located right here in Olde Burien! I just realized they have gift registry….mmm…maybe I will have to get married again. Suprisingly, I’m almost speechless when it come to this divine place, so you will have to check out their website for the most incredible pictures. Just click on the picture below~

Though I tend to stick around our local Burien area for a good time. I decided it was time to try out some places over the weekend that are just out of our backyard but close enough to be our neighbor. A few notable mentions. If you want atmosphere, hip, lively, yummy drinks and food. Below would be my immediate recommendations for the source of a good time. Each place offers a different vibe, unique with its own quality. You can click on the names to go directly to their website to check out all the glorious details of each special place. We covered these locations in the span of two nights. Sampling bits and pieces from them all. We now look forward to going back and digesting each one individually. West 5 Lounge & Restaurant has the comfy retro style chairs with a drink menu that covers all tastes and some of the basic comfort foods like Mac & Cheese, Toasted Cheese Sandwich and a Meatloaf sandwich. Check out their website to see the full menu.

You only have to walk across the street to find yet another great place! The Matador

The walls are draped with Red Velvet Curtains, antique sconces with an orange glow and flickering candles everywhere. The food looked amazing but we only tried out the Tequila Bar.
Now travel a few minutes North on California Ave. for a few more funky finds like The Mission

We stopped in around 10 pm and it just happened to be Happy Hour, we enjoyed some $5.00 soft chicken and pork tacos. They have too many tequilas to mention, but have won awards from City Search for their margaritas three years in a row. They were excellent in our opinion.
Last to mention is Blackbird Bistro next door.

We really enjoyed this place. A martini and ahi tuna and calmari.
Ok, really the last one to mention that we visited was Circa. Smaller, cozy, family atmosphere with 15 beers on tap.
Since this is not an in depth review of each one. You will have to go and try them out for yourself! I hope you enjoy…

Just a reminder that every Saturday night you can find live music at 909 Coffee and Wine in Burien. I personally have spent a dozen Saturday’s there sipping or chugging wine and enjoying the atmosphere and local company. Click here for the list of information of bands and the type of music that will be featured. This Saturday, May 24th, the Paul Green Band is playing. This is the only band on the list that I have not had the opportunity to hear. So you will find me there tomorrow having yet another 909 experience. The menu is very unique with a variety of flavors offered. They recently just introduced another new menu for the season. The evening can be as exciting as you wish. You can relax, sway to the music or find a partner and dance.
